NEVER ENOUGH

006

They are back! Turnstile returns with their long-awaited NEVER ENOUGH. The pre-released singles were good, and I was excited for this record.

If the trumpets, flute, and synth keyboard doesnt showcase their notorious genre-blending, I don’t know what will. It really is one of their most impressive assets. Likewise, you have to admit Turnstile do transitions better than most. Catchy, smooth, subtle, strong. Transitions from track-to-track vary widely, but they all contribute to the slick, refined vibe of the record. They also play a very important role in making Turnstile’s records feel like seamless cohesive pieces of work (as opposed to a collection of single tracks). NEVER ENOUGH is no different. It’s refined sounds sometimes comes off as a little simple - I sometimes think Turnstile could handle more dynamics/elements - but its not terrible.

Now, will NEVER ENOUGH be joining it’s sister album GLOW ON in my Forever Favorite collection? Unfortunately not. Maybe its because NEVER ENOUGH feels like… the unglier twin sister of GLOW ON? GLOW ON was a hit, and it makes sense why Turnstile would want to repeat the recipie. And I’m sure it will work, hit the charts, and be popular. But in terms of wowing me, I think they needed to push more boundaries in NEVER ENOUGH, get out of their comfort zone a bit. I also just don’t find that NEVER ENOUGH has the highs, lows, catchiness, and “wow” moments that GLOW ON did. GLOW ON felt so remarkable is because it felt like the first of its kind. That funky, crisp sound-blending that still felt like danceable hardcore. That novelty just doesnt apply to NEVER ENOUGH.

Nonetheless, it is a solid album that I will be streaming, it just didnt change anything for me. Its Turnstile doing what they do well, but not pushing any boundaries or showcasing any super new sounds.
