Send A Prayer My Way
I had never heard of Torres until the singles and EPs with Julien Baker started rolling out. Her vocals are a nice mature contrast to Baker’s ever-young voice (the same reason Lucy Dacus and Baker pair so well together). Still, I wouldn’t say Torres is anywhere near as talented as Baker. I really enjoyed Sylvia and Sugar in the Tank as singles, which is why I suppose I had high expectations for the album. The ultra-lesbian duo really embraced the country theme (like everyone and their mother since 2023). I technically cannot say its inauthentic, as Baker is from Tennessee and Torres comes from Florida. Overall, the genre wasn’t a major problem for me. It was rather that all the tracks sound remarkably similar - so much so that at a certain point it feels not even worth listening to anymore. The only exceptions to this remain Sylvia, Sugar in the Tank, and The Only Marble I’ve Got Left, which is quite a sweet song. Their repetitiveness makes it also feel like a collection of similair songs, rather than a dynamic body of work with highs and lows.
