False Persona
I came across False Persona today while going through Mall Grabs discography. The duo’s EP ‘Crazy’ does indeed go crazy. Both the title track and Its Time goes really hard. They produced a more hype-synth sound than what I was expecting, but it was a pleasant surprise. I wanted to know more about this other guy working with Mall Grab, so I went to check him out.
I pressed play on his most popular track (in fourth place, after the three top spots were filled by the Crazy tracks) and almost died. Knocking almost knocked me out. I’ve never heard a track like this. It has the power and energy and grit of a hard techno song, But without the hard techno. The perfect acid breakbeat. From here, of course, I explored the album. Acid Avengers is a 6-song album by False Start and Nite Fleit - two songs by her, two by him, and two collaborations. The two tracks by her (1 + 2) are great. I can not say I have the same jaw-dropping reaction as I do when I listen to the collab tracks, but they are really excellent nonetheless. Amazing production. Parallax is when/where things start to get interesting. Their first collab track is absolutely awesome. The layers are exceptionally done. on the one hand, in terms of coolness, I would say the record peaks at the next track, Knocking. but on the other hand, if we are talking energy, I would have to say it peaks at track 5, Protocal. what an strong start to a song. incredibly addictive listen. the record finishes with a more trancey vibe to fit the name: The Tab Didn’t Dissolve. It keeps the energy up, but lets it fade out rather subtly and mesmerizingly. A 10/10 record, especially for acid breakbeat lovers like myself.
UPDATE: Upon further exploration into False Persona’s discography, I regret to report that I sincerely do not have the time to fangirl over the production of every single one of this man’s songs. I would love to. But I cannot. The vast majority of his work really is perfect. I even tried to make a list of my favorite songs but it didnt work because I was just adding… all of them. False Persona has sparked in me that feeling that many music lovers may know: that feeling of anxiously wanting to hear the next song but simultaneously being unable to bring yourself to pause/stop the one being played. It really is a wonder how this man maintains just 60k monthly listeners. That being said, implore you to listen. You won’t regret it.
