Erotica Veronica
Its here! The Miya Folick album I have waited oh-so patiently for. After stumbling across her song Thingamajig sometime last year (and falling madly in love with it), I've been a committed fan. The singles and EPs from Erotica Veronica were a stunning set-up for the complete album. This record feels like a reading a diary, left open on a bedside table. A remarkably raw account of (queer) womanhood and youth, Erotica Veronica is honest, free, fragile, sweet, brave, and sad. Miya feels surrendered, unfiltered. The album has just the right amount of drama while remaining tethered and leaving you with a hope for the future. An appreciation for the small things. A craving for love. A craving for freedom. A joy for life.
Miya has had moments of questionable vocal production off-and-on throughout the years. Erotica Veronica is no exception. That being said, the instrumental production and overall sonic variety is strong on this record. The tracks sound distinct from one another, each catchy and melodic in their own right.
I would be doing a great disservice to the record if I did not spotlight the writing. It has some of the strongest lyricism of any album we’ve seen this year. Miya is so honest. Sometimes it feels like she is close to breaking. So close. But doesn’t quite. Which makes her strong. Honest but strong. Highlights are the following:
“You’ve been losing weight like you said you wanted to, but now I miss your old molecules. I say that I’ll starve myself until I disappear and you tell me that I frighten you."
“Need you like a bite that won’t stop itching. You’re one half with me and one half missing."
“I almost married a clean woman. She had the brain of a solar system.”
"I need freedom to feel like I have a fucking soul. So if you hate me, I'm sorry. I wish that I were more."
Sometimes it feels like Miya has a soul like The Cranberries. Just listen to that “heya” wailing on La Da Da. Overall, Erotica Veronica is a beautiful record to its core. I reccomend it vehemently.
