Hers

005

Kind of like Men I Trust, its not fair to expect any new sounds out of Matt Maltese. He found a semi-original sound, mastered it, and now mass-produces it. He (alongside Hozier) owns the hopelessly and irrecevably in- love male indie pop genre. I have never heard about a man write about women the way Matt Maltese does - and Hers is the peak of this (down to the damn title AND cover).

He shamelessly captures a side of love that most shy away from. That most dont talk about. The obsession. The infatuation. The mania. The feeling that you exist to find this person. To be with them. To fall at their feet. Somehow, his love songs and heartbreak songs have the same level of ache and longing to them. Anytime, Anyplace, Anyhow has been one of my most listened-to tracks of 2025 ever since it dropped as a single. It remains one of the prettiest and saddest (and relatable) songs I know.

As you may know, Maltese's 2020 sophomore album Krystal is one of my Forever Favorites. In comparison, Hers falls a bit flat. Not many of the melodies stuck out to me, and the writing was not remarkable and a little repetitive. Anytime, Anyplace, Anyhow and Pined For You My Whole Life are among the only tracks I listen to on a regular basis.
