New In: Men I Trust

Equus Aquinus

Brand new Men I Trust album! I don’t think you can approach their new music with any expectations of anything new or surprising: just an ever-perfection of the sound they have been continuously mastering for years now. I always remark at the quality of their production and overall the auditory pleasure evoked by their music. A nice album for spring, calm evenings, walking, parks, or studying.

Equus Caballus

UPDATE! The release of a second Men I Trust album just two months following their latest release prompted a search into the story behind the double-up. The first, Equus Asinus is named after the latin ass, or donkey. Meanwhile, the recent drop, is titled Equus Caballus, or horse. With similar color palettes, I thought it might be a deluxe or extended version? But no.

“Early in the writing and recording process, we realized we had a collection of songs with distinct energies yet equally meaningful to us. It became clear that we wanted to release them as two separate entities both from the same genus: Equus Asinus and Equus Caballus.” While the difference in “energies” is probably not one your dad could decifer if you play the two records in he car back-to-back, but definitely one you can decifer if you are a long-time fan of the group. While Asinus is more moody and jazzy, Caballus feels lighter and indie-er, with more vocals. I appreciate the distinction, though it remains true that very little Men I Trust does ever feels completely new or original from what they have done before.
